Bolton Abbey (Skipton)
This walk was in the Bolton Abbey grounds on the 21st
April.
Bolton Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales has been a distinct Estate
for about 1000 years and today extends along a 6 mile stretch of
the River Wharfe between Bolton and Barden Bridge.
And that was my walk, starting at the Abbey and following the
river Wharfe down to Barden bridge then crossing the bridge
then walking back. And what a very nice walk it was too.
First of all the Abbey its self is pretty imposing.

You can stay on the left hand side of the river or you can cross
at the bridge or if you fancy it then you can cross on the
stepping stones.

Once you cross the river then just turn left and follow the path all
the way to the Cavendish Pavilion with toilets.
From there you enter Strid wood.

Strid Wood is a Site of Special
Scientific Interest because it is the largest remnant of acidic
woodland in Yorkshire.
There are a few trails to take from there but i wanted the green
one that follows the river.
Just keep walking until you come to the Strid.

Strid, a notorious stretch of water where the River Wharfe is
forced into a deep and narrow thundering channel. So imagine
this river forced into a gap only 6 foot wide. This is a very
dangerous area of water there is no known case of someone
coming out alive after falling in
These pictures do not do it justice.
Looks peaceful enough........don't be fooled, this is one fast
moving river.

Now if you make the mistake that i made then you Cross this bridge and make your way back on the other side of
the river, this time
you climb above the river to look down at the Strid.
So this is NOT Barden Bridge

If you want to go on to Barden Bridge then you must keep walking on this path about another 3/4 of a mile then cross the river there :D Then work your way back.

When you get close to the Cavendish Pavilion again keep a look
out for this sign (if you ain't got a map) Glad i had my map as i
would have missed the best bit of the whole walk.
I saw on the map a place called VALLEY OF DESOLATION and
thought that sounds evil.

So a detour of about 3/4 to 1 mile each way was made.
After a small trek on some farm path you come to a small
wetland just past this there is a track down to the first water fall.

Then make you way up the left side of the waterfall and follow
the path along side this stream.
At then end of the stream is the 2nd waterfall, i would have been
quite happy to sit there all day.

Then just make you way back the way you came. then carry on
with the walk back to the Abbey.
